I love videos! Especially as they are lighter and faster and easier to watch these days, it makes videos the go to technique for viral excitement. And now, with reality tv carving out it's own medium in video (I credit The Blair Witch Project for that!) it's making video developing even easier. You don't need a studio, lights, and professional actors... you can just grab your camera, your mini cam, and now even your phone and put together clips of whatever message you want to share... plus, the more personal and "reality" like it is, the easier it is for people to connect to you. I go back to psychology all the time... reality tv scored because people can connect to "real" people better than they would an actor... same thing goes for social media... people want to connect to others... Once you start making your fabulously inventive and engaging videos... how do you get the views, the likes, the shares? Well, not only is this video (which could very easily be a boring topic...) a fun and entertaining bit to watch, it's full of fantastic basic principles of YouTube sharing that everyone should know. (and the artist is incredible!)

I have been saying it for years, connecting to people is where it's at! After a while twitter and facebook become uninteresting... even for something you are super passionate about. I am obsessed with interior design, for those who know me, my flat is filled with Elle Decor, Veranda, Dwell, Traditional Home, Costal Home, blogs like Apartment Therapy, and pretty much all things design focused. With this obsession, I still do not closely follow any of their facebook pages, twitter streams or pay much attention to updates... when I want to poke around, I'll poke around, otherwise I don't want to be bothered... but who's facebook page and twitter stream do I follow? Well... Kelly Wearstler of course! The difference for me? It's a person. It's someone I can relate to, it's someone I am having a conversation with... I don't want to have a conversation with a company logo. I know, I know, it's hard when you don't have something sexy like being the designer of the Viceroy Hotels or the judge on Designer's challenge... what if you have a product? Or simply a brand you want to build a community around? Well, go back to the reason why people are on facebook to begin with... it's connect to PEOPLE. So... no matter what your business is, it's made up of people isn't it? Well then showcase your team! Your personality! Add photos to who's authoring your blog... include videos and talk about what's going on in your office that day. Each medium is different... for example twitter and facebook can be short and fun... you can mix up links to your blog and @ing certain strategic people... but also throw in a "@karensmith thanks for the holiday cupcakes!" (perhaps with a pic of Karen and her cupcakes) and see how it will engage Karen's following and also add flavor and perhaps a smile to your followers who get a small respite from the typical technical acronyms. As for your blog... mix it up! Have some posts be product updates and technical news... but then add a fun customer feature and write it as if you're writing for a magazine... meaning, make it fun to read! Variety is the spice of life... and if life online reflects life in the real world... then grab the cayenne pepper baby!

OVER IT: STOPPING THE MUSIC FOR SILLY STUFF.

More and more weddings are opting to omit traditions that interrupt the flow of the reception. My wedding planner simply stated, “if you think it’s cheesy, then chances are, others do too.” Oftentimes, once the toasts have been made, the spotlight dance is over and dinner is done, it’s very difficult to get folks off the dance floor to stop and watch the groom begrudgingly take the stage to stick his hand up the bride’s dress for the garter toss.

As for throwing the bouquet, it’s somewhat of a challenge nowadays to find single ladies eager to catch a bouquet in hopes of being the next Mrs. Something (Women’s Lib, what?!). And finally, many modern weddings are opting for dessert buffets or other alternatives to the typical wedding cake and traditional cake cutting. Again, another thing to stop the music for…and who wants a bunch of frosting all over their face after getting their makeup professionally done?

OLD BUT AWESOME: SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLUE.

This is a fantastic tradition and is special to the bride because it can be so personal. It doesn’t interfere with the wedding itself and no matter how outside the box a wedding is, it’s easy to keep.

“Something old” symbolizes the past, the family and those no longer with the wedding party. It is often a family heirloom and an opportunity to receive a very special priceless gift. “Something new” represents good fortune and success for a wonderful new life; this is sometimes the engagement ring.

“Something borrowed” symbolizes the love and support of family and friends in times of need. This can be something from a best friend or a sister. “Something Blue” is an object that symbolizes faithfulness and loyalty. A modern twist to the typical blue garter might be blue undies or shoes.

OVER IT: IDENTICAL BRIDESMAIDS.

Boo! How un-fun is this fashion mandate? The ’80s matchy-matchy dresses, necklaces, hair and (eek—dyed!) shoes, are so passé. And thank goodness! The goal today is to have everyone look fabulous and feel comfy in their bridesmaid frocks. It looks awkward if you’re trying to stuff all different body types into the same dress style.

Fashion-forward weddings now offer different style dresses in the same hue, a variety of shades in the same color tones or, better yet, a mix and match of dresses that share a same theme. Bridesmaid dresses have become an opportunity to get creative and make a bigger visual impact on your wedding day.

NEW: CHOREOGRAPHING A SURPRISE DANCE.

This fantastic new trend has been making weddings memorable and full of fun! Whether it’s the bride and groom opting not to bore their guests with wobbling back and forth for their spotlight dance, shows like Dancing With the Stars have inspired making more of an effort to dazzle the floor with new moves.

Or, sometimes it’s the wedding party that plans a show-stopper. I recently went to a reception where the Michael-Jackson-obsessed bride received a surprise by her wedding party breaking out into a fully rehearsed “Thriller” dance. Sure, this takes time, but it’s worth the experience! Everyone worries that the dance floor will be empty, so get out there and be an example.

I Lost on Missoni but scored for Fall

Missoni has always been a favorite designer of mine. Ever since I discovered the long wrap robe in my Mother’s closet, I was smitten with the woven intricacies and the trademark zig zag print. Needless to say I was beyond excited to see Missoni do a limited line for Target. Having asked a Target employee when the line was coming, she asked “What is this Missoni?” I thought to myself… this is going to be great. This isn’t a super popular brand in America like Gucci or Louis Vuitton… many people don’t know Missoni the way I do and I can’t wait to buy one of everything! Yesterday was the day for Missoni products to arrive at Target, I took off at my lunch hour prepared to scoop up an armful of new pieces for my closet. But when I arrived, I saw empty racks with Missoni signage above. I asked an employee if they have stocked the racks yet and she laughed at me. “There was a line outside from 6 or 7am… everything was gone by 8:30am, including the bedding and domestics.” Well, apparently I wasn’t the only one who valued Missoni’s collection. The website was inundated and down all day, so the idea of buying online was not an option. And the insanity continued when I saw a Missoni for Target dress sell on ebay for $895!

I thought of this season’s fashion, how the 70’s are huge this year and how perfectly Missoni’s prints would fit the boho chic trends we are seeing this Fall. Instead of getting discouraged, I was on a mission to find the perfect prints for the perfect price. Check these out >>>

The idea is to focus on personalizing your wedding, not through centerpieces, name cards and chiavari chairs, but through your vows, toasts, songs, music and dancing. Bring out the essence of who you are as a couple, because that’s what people will remember!

THE DANCING. Wherever you end up getting hitched, it will be the energy or feeling at the venue that matters. When 162 couples that attended two or more weddings in the last year were asked, “What did you remember most about the wedding receptions you attended?”64% answered with the band.*

Spend your money on a good DJ or live band and dance the night away. If this means you have to wear flip-flops or change into a dancing dress, do it!

Why? If you’re out on the dance floor, laughing and having a great time, your guests will be too. But, if you’re too serious and stressing about the details, and your groom is too shy to take a few spins on the dance floor, attendees will feel it. The best accessory to any party is the life you breathe into it.

Take the stress off of trying to create something that will wow your guests and focus on the priceless moments! Sometimes, these are things you can’t plan for, like a tearful toast from your father or the nervous giggles you got during your first real kiss.

Jeff Howe of Wired Magazine first coined the term crowdsourcing. Howe explains that because technological advances have allowed for cheap consumer electronics, the gap between professionals and amateurs has been diminished. Sigh... More Work for those who care to be Private on FB...

New article from All Facebook discusses the changes that FB is making. My thoughts are... this sounds like a lot of work. So the idea is that it opens our Facebook profiles to the public (some people may want this, some younger people may not realize the implications of this, some people use FB to reach as many as they can...). Now, even if you're not friends with the person, you can tag them in a photo... so Part 1 is they are making the social network pubic. So the remedy to their plan... for those of us that don't want pedophiles looking at their daughter on their Cancun vacation or for those of us who care about their businesses and don't want others to see ridiculous Bay to Breaker photos or for those of us who simply don't want every idiot out there knowing everything about our lives... are simply going to have work harder to protect themselves.

So the Part 2 of this is now more controls. What used to be groups we could lump people into to easily share or not share info (similar to Google +), we will loose. As of Thursday those are gone. We now have to control for every post, every tag, every link, and every comment or like. And this means, more email notifications as well. Facebook taking our information and going public with it means more work for those who wish to remain private.

For businesses this is great, you can now spam more people and get in front of people you're not connected to. For us, getting spammed is never fun. My personal feeling on all of this is, "really? more work?". I am already embarrassed by how much time I poke around on FB as it is, now I have to spend more time managing it, maintaining it, and monitoring it.

The changes go into effect on Thursday. Do what you will with FB, but I think it's making me step away from my lap top ... Not sure if I am going to commit social suicide yet (see article) but I think a new strategy will soon be implemented for my own personal sharing medium.

The changes attempt to make the privacy settings more accessible and user friendly.

Big Changes

Here’s a list of the major improvements.

The privacy settings are moving toward individual post windows and profiles.
Users are gaining the ability to approve tags of themselves in others’ posts and photos.
All tags will include an attribution of the person who did the tagging.
Places no longer require physical check-ins, so people can add locations to posts, even from the desktop.
You don’t need to be friends with someone to tag them in a post or photo.
You don’t have to like a brand to tag it in a post or photo.
Facebook has changed the word “everyone” to “public” in privacy settings, for clarity.
You can customize privacy, or visibility of information, on a post-by-post basis.
Users can edit the visibility of individual bits of content anytime after they post.
The changes don’t affect mobile users, at least not for now.

NYC’s Social Media Diva, Nikki Beauchamp’s Advice: Go Mobile – Roost for the iPad!

“Thanks for the info re: app … if you have plans to present in the future, would love to know/attend!” Rhonda and other rave reviewers comment after native Manhattanite and New York City real estate agent Nikki Beauchamp’s panel discussion on “Apps to enhance productivity for real estate agents” at REBNY. Scrolling through her page made me want to take notes of all the great ideas for posts and questions. Nikki has it dialed in, but what I really wanted to know was what her advice would be for businesses and professionals to get going on social marketing?

Nikki’s immediate response was, “I’m all about efficiency, so for me #1 is being mobile”.

My initial reaction was, mobile = expensive and teeny tiny text. Nikki explained the gap between those who can’t seem to get moving on the social web and those who are not mobile. They do go hand in hand. If efficiency is key, then the ability to operate away from the office, which now includes everything from email to keeping tabs on posts, comments, likes, tweets, and updates, while on the go is essential.

Don’t worry, she didn’t leave us hanging there… she did add a #2 to her words of wisdom for social marketing…

#2, Refer back to #1. Efficiency is key. Use tools to help you tame technology, take the power back and don’t allow it to run your life. (Don’t just rely on Facebook or Twitter.) As Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and others took off running, new and equally agile runners joined the race. Some have been sprinters (disappointing apps that have come and gone) but many are in it for the distance and have become almost a replacement tool.

Nikki often relies on Roost’s Social Marketing Platform to schedule out posts and create campaigns. It came as no surprise that she would be one of Roost’s first users on the iPad. “I was so excited about Roost on the iPad, not sure if its Christmas in July, or an early birthday present!” exclaimed Nikki, “I checked it out and thought wow, now its truly a bonus as I can adjust as needed from anywhere… not needing to be tethered to my computer.”

Nikki describes that even if she has created a campaign, she can always go into Roost to tweak it, change it, or add something to it if something more relevant came up (which happens so often in today’s up to the second news cycles). “The fact that you have a feed and can customize it, you can do almost everything from one place. As an example, I have my blog, my broker’s blog, and several other favorite news sources pulled into it- I really don’t have to go far.” Focusing on 3rd party tools that are functional will be your key to efficiency. Start off with learning new ways to attack the problem, which, for most is limited time.

“People have to figure out how to be efficient and make it work for them. The problem with not using 3rd party tools like Roost is that you don’t have multiple hours throughout the day to dedicate to marketing yourself.” So really #1 is #2… both lead you back to efficiency and taking control.

Using Nikki’s advice, find tools to spend a minimal amount of time, whether its once a week or every few days and schedule out your content. Then use mobile technology and 3^rd party tools to keep on top of it to remain connected and engaged with your followers. Figure out a system that works for you and get resourceful, otherwise, you will loathe social networking and view it as a chore. Once you get yourself into a rhythm, you will see that the benefits of social marketing outweigh the amount of time it takes to keep it going…. and you just may discover that it is actually a lot of fun along the way too!

I recently got engaged. It was incredible. He did it on a boat, under a willow tree in Central Park. (Say it with me… awwwww!) Everything was fabulous and I was so excited to tell the world. But with all that instant communication available right now, news travels fast. I wanted to be sure everyone that mattered learned about my engagement in person, or at the very least on the phone.

As the marketing communications director at Roost, it’s my job to broadcast everything, but before clicking “share” on Facebook there are some things to note:

DO: Post something more than just changing your relationship status. Just changing your status to “Engaged to” almost feels like you’re trying to sneak it by. In addition to changing your status, post something fun! I posted, “Ok everyone…if you can believe it…Terra Khachooni is now ENGAGED to @Christopher Casteleyn and I have never been happier!!!!”

DON’T: Post a picture of just your ring. It’s tacky. You can post a picture of the two of you and you can be holding your hand up, but posting a photo of just your hand or only your ring isn’t the classiest thing. There’s a fine line between being excited about something and showing something off. Many of my friends wanted to see the ring and I emailed them a photo of it and humbly said, “I feel so lucky to be given such a gift.”

DO: Post a photo or change your profile default to a picture of the two of you. It’s a great way to show your special someone how much they mean to you. Also, for those “friends” on your Facebook who may not truly know you, it will give them a picture of what you look like as a couple.

DON’T: Post on Facebook or Tweet it out the minute you get engaged. Although it’s exciting news and you want so badly to shout it from the rooftops, take a second to make this moment precious between the two of you.

DO: Wait until you’ve told everyone important the news before you post it to your social network sites. The worst is to have a close friend or family member see it on Facebook. The close ones deserve face time or a personal call or email!

DON’T: Post a link to your wedding website. You have no idea who you’re going to end up inviting and the list will change over time, so be careful who you share wedding details with. If you share too much, they will be expecting an invite.

Copious Snags $2M To Create Marketplace For Facebook Era

Social commerce company Copious is launching with $2 million in seed funding from Foundation Capital, Google Ventures, BlackBerry Partners Fund and a handful of angel investors.

The San Francisco-based site is a project of Utah Street Labs Inc. and was created earlier this year by former Mobshop Chief Executive Jim Rose; former vice president of mobile strategy for Critical Path Inc., Rob Zuber; and former head of marketing for Facebook Inc., Jonathan Ehrlich.

Their big idea? To convert those who browse e-commerce sites into buyers by increasing vendor transparency and accountability.

Copious does this by requiring users to sign into Facebook and leveraging individuals' information and connections, so that buyers and sellers can have a more complete view of who they are doing business with. Copious will also use the information on Facebook to suggest purchases specific to each user, based on ‘likes' and other preferences.

Copious will ultimately take a 10% transaction fee--an amount it is slicing to 3.5% right now to launch the initial site.

"Authentic identity has really changed everything," said Jonathan Ehrlich, Copious co-founder and chief operating officer. "Ninety-nine percent of people on places like Craigslist and eBay don't buy anything."

Ehrlich said Copious aims to capture that walkaway traffic, which he says occurs because seller credibility is weak. Copious will launch with a select group of sellers, focused initially on the handbags category and featuring sellers like eBags, Malababa and Ritzy Ragz. Additional categories will follow.

"People love handbags," he said. "Handbags are identity-laden."

Kickin' it Old School... Clippin' Coupons

There's big money in small savings.

Digital coupon company Coupons.com Inc. has secured $200 million in its first-ever investment from institutional investors, and the 13-year-old company has secured a whopping $1 billion valuation in the process, according to a source with direct knowledge of the deal.

The infusion came from roughly a half-dozen unnamed mutual funds and marks the latest in a string of private technology companies raising capital at billion-dollar valuations.

"We're an atypical Silicon Valley company. For 13 years we've flown under the radar," said Chief Executive Steven Boal.

Unlike mobile payments company Square Inc. and rental service Airbnb Inc., both of which TechCrunch has reported within the past week are in the middle of raising funds at $1 billion valuations, Coupons.com is not centered on a new concept or radical technology.

Based in Mountain View, Calif., the company operates a site that allows customers to print coupons and also promotes discounts through loyalty cards and mobile promotions. Thanks to hundreds of customers--including Clorox, General Mills, Kmart and Walgreens--the company is tracking to do $100 million revenue in 2011, nearly double the amount it did in 2010, according to the same source.

Since launching in 1998, the company has increased its share of coupon redemption in the U.S. from 1% to 10% today, according to the company. Boal said he aims to capture the other 90%, which is now handled by newspapers and direct mail.

"We compete against offline promotion companies," said Boal. "That's where the shift is taking place."

Boal said $100 million of the infusion will provide liquidity to early individual investors and the company's 300 employees. Boal declined to share the names of those early investors or the amount they'd invested.

The other $100 million will be used to better service existing customers, hire more sales staff, expand internationally, acquire companies and improve its technology.

Coupons.com, which acquired half of London-based Couponstar.com in 2006 to enter the European market, will likely pursue a similar strategy to enter Asia and is in discussions now with several potential partners, Boal said.

Boal said as more coupons convert to the digital model, his company aims to enable customers to redeem them on their cell phones.

"In five years we'll be able to do that," said Boal.

Digital coupons represent the fastest growing segment of the coupon industry, which distributed more than 332 billion coupons to consumers in 2010, according to Coupons.com.

I’ve transitioned my off hours surfing the web (so old school) to scrolling through Facebook Pages… I love poking through my favorite designers, favorite restaurants, favorite girlie pages, celebrities, and local associations. It’s so much fun to check out what’s new, what others are saying, and feel a sense of connection. I love that I can check out Michael Kors’ Page, see Angelina Jolie and Maria Bello rocking his threads and feel like I am somewhat a part of it as a Michael Kors customer. It’s also fun to see Michael Kors rocking out with Mary J. Blige in Paris on his 30th anniversary of the line. I can get a feel for his personality and feel part of his “world” because I’m carrying a purse designed by him. What could ruin this fun moment of scrolling one of my favorite and most respected designer’s pages?

Typos.

Posts that don’t make any sense.

Misspelled words.

It can take the pedestal I put them on and crush it. I was on the Le Cirque Page (famous NYC restaurant) and I can tell, they have it dialed in. But, what if you’re not Le Cirque? Or Michael Kors for that matter? What if you don’t have a team of social media superstars who are monitoring and managing your pages, your comments, your likes, and your messaging?

All it takes is a minute, a few seconds, and the ability to edit before sending something out that can make the difference. I know that in the moment, from my phone, or in between emails/phone calls, my posts will not be as thought through or polished, as it is when I am scheduling it. Since I use Roost’s social marketing platform, I can fill up my campaign and then always revisit it. I can edit or spellcheck my posts a day or week in advance. I may also catch myself and realize there is a better way to say what I want to say.

There are times I look back at questions I asked or posts I’ve made and thought of multiple ways I could have made it better, or could have reworded it in a way that would invite more interaction. In short, with a little more time/thought, my Page could overall be more strategic.

So make sure your page is a reflection of who you are as a professional or a business and use 3rd party tools [like Roost] to not only save you time, but buy you time.

Eightfold Logic Raises $2M, Launches Social Writing App

Inbound marketing optimization company Eightfold Logic said it has raised $2 million to launch its cloud application to help writers and content producers create more relevant and shareable online content.

Its product, InboundWriter, integrates real-time search and social intelligence into the writing process. The application combines research, writing and online optimization into one cloud-based process.

Groupon-like site for Shoes!?

Social-shopping company ShoeDazzle.com Inc. said it has raised $40 million in a financing round led by Andreessen Horowitz.

The $40 million adds to the $20 million or so that ShoeDazzle, based in Los Angeles, previously raised from investors including Lightspeed Venture Partners and Polaris Ventures. Andreessen Horowitz put in $30 million in this latest round, with the rest coming from ShoeDazzle's existing investors, said Brian Lee, ShoeDazzle's chief executive. With the financing, Andreessen Horowitz Partner John O'Farrell is joining ShoeDazzle's board.

ShoeDazzle, which has more than 3 million members and nearly a million fans on Facebook, allows shoppers to join the site for free, filling out an online form that describes their shopping choices and styles.

Every month, they then get an email with ShoeDazzle-branded shoes and accessories that they can purchase for a flat rate of $39.95 each. If a shopper chooses to skip a purchase that month, they pay nothing or can accrue a credit towards a purchase another time. Hollywood celebrities including Kim Kardashian have been involved in designing items for the company, which was founded in 2008.

O'Farrell of Andreessen Horowitz said the ShoeDazzle investment is a "growth" investment for the firm. While Andreessen Horowitz has previously invested in Web household names such as Groupon Inc. and Facebook Inc., it has now turned its attention to Web companies that might not be quite as well known outside the cognoscenti but represent "the new batch of Web companies that will mature in a big way," O'Farrell said.

Apart from ShoeDazzle, those investments also include Box.net Inc. and Aliph Inc. (better known as Jawbone), he said.

ShoeDazzle's Lee said that with the new funding, the company plans to beef up its staff of around 135 people. In addition, the company plans to launch in international markets such as the United Kingdom and to expand into other shopping categories apart from shoes and accessories, he said.

Once upon a time, mothers loved getting teapots, hand-written cards, maybe even a snazzy sweater. But the modern mom is hip, fresh, active, and would much prefer to spend some quality time with her daughter. Mothers have changed and thus Mother’s Day is changing too.

When thinking of what I’d like to get for my mother, who is currently on a safari in Africa, I thought, wait…even though my Mom is over 60, she isn’t knitting in a rocking chair! I know she’d appreciateanything I gave her, but what would she really love?

Sure, today’s moms may love material things (after all, they are women!), but in an era with busier lives and juggling so many priorities, we are finding it harder and harder to give something that has increased in value over the years…time! Here are a few experiences to treat your mom to, this weekend or anytime.

The Traditional Mom

Plan a fun day filled with things like a cooking class, wine tasting (in the NYC-area? Get tickets for our Wine Getaways>) or touring a local attraction. Treat her to lunch or dinner when your excursion is over. The memories will be worth more to her than any blouse you could find!

The Active Mom

Pick her up, have a backpack full of yummy treats like a variety of cheeses, breads and fruits, and take her hiking. The weather is (finally!) getting warmer, so find something she would love to do and get her motivated! A golf class and/or a horseback ride might also do the trick. Either way, she’ll love the push to do something sporty with you.

The Forever-Young Mom

Treat her to a night out! Get her gussied up, bond over cocktails and buy her a fancy meal. Vegas prices can be affordable, but should that be out of your price range, take a trip to the nearest city and to a place she would never think of going like the Viceroy or W Hotels. My favorite going-out picks are the Redwood Room at the Clift Hotel in San Francisco or theRose Bar at Gramercy Park in New York City. Nothing would make a hip mama more excited.

I know I need to be on social networks to market my business, I am sold on that. Maybe I am old, but I just do not see why it is so important to young people. Janey from Madison, Wisconsin wonders. Janey manages the community page for her organization. “Do I really need to comment back every time someone says something? I guess I don’t understand why anyone cares?” You may be in this camp. You may not have the same need to have Twitter and Facebook on your phone, pinging you every minute. And many even pin Facebook as an almost vain outlet. Yes, it is a different way of thinking… but to the latter part of Gen Y, also known as the Millennials, it’s about belonging.

If belonging is key, then this explains the growth of online communities around everything. Playing fantasy football, the way we shop, the photos we take, and even how we’re feeling. There is a great need for recognition and expression. It may seem that the Millennials just want to be their own mini celebrity in their own virtual worlds and some do, but whittled down, they just want to be recognized. Understanding this group and their needs will help shape how you market socially.

On one hand you have:
• A generation who’s parents wanted to give them everything they didn’t have
• An era where the overwhelming message is of acceptance (politically/socially)
• Newer, gentler teaching styles where everyone gets a gold star as long as they try
• The most educated of any generation before them
• A generation not faced with a great deal of challenge and rejection
• Flashy success stories of peers like Zuckerberg (Facebook) and Jack Dorsey (Twitter) making millions out of a dorm room
• “Reality” TV which is most assuredly not reality that spits out fabulous, opulent lifestyles and narcissistic characters

However, on the other hand you have:
• Tragedies like 9-11
• The dot com crash
• The lending crisis
• The real estate crash
• Country wide debt
• Jobs taken by the Baby Boomers and Generation X
• An aging workforce that makes Gen Y less employed than any other generation
• Idealistic and perhaps entitled expectations, which limits thinking and opportunities
• New feelings of rejection and challenge – jobs, interviews, living at home

Their living observation of rapid change, growth, and demise has made the appeal to connect and express essential to feeling “part of something”. Understanding this desire for recognition and belonging colliding with instant communication, social technology, and environments where your input matters made social media explode. From sharing your latest music mix and photos of your birthday to TV shows “needing your vote” this group has found a way to make their lives interactive, communal, and important.

Marketing to this generation should be fun because you have a group that is excited to share. Engage with them; don’t leave their comments hanging, be sure to comment back. Share something personal, something funny, and expose a little more of who you are. Connect with your fan base by liking and sharing their thoughts. Promote or highlight your #1 fan. In the end, be fun, engage, and soon you’ll be something that everyone looks forward to.

Would you pay for Social? Ning says you will!

A year ago this month, social-networking start-up Ning Inc. raised eyebrows in Silicon Valley when it decided to phase out free accounts.

The company, which was co-founded by Internet entrepreneur Marc Andreessen, said it wasn't making enough money from ads to justify continuing the free parts of its site. It was a controversial move; the usual model for Internet businesses is to provide free content and services and make money from ads.

So how has that decision worked out? Better than expected, says Ning Chief Executive Jason Rosenthal.

The company had been hoping that about 9,000 of its 285,000 free account-holders would agree to pay for the service. Instead, more than 50,000 made the shift, Rosenthal said in an interview with Digits.

"We debunked the myth that people think everything should be free. If you have a differentiated service, people will pay for it," Rosenthal said.

Ning, which was founded in 2004, helps people set up social-networking-style sites that include things like blogs, comments and video uploads. Ning is now focusing on companies, musicians, political groups, non-profits and the like. The company says these groups want to make their sites social without being limited to the giant social networks like Facebook and MySpace.

Ning gives its customers the ability to create custom sites and to more carefully adjust privacy settings, including creating groups that are entirely private.

Creators of groups are charged based on the amount of storage and bandwidth needed, and accounts range from $3 a month to $50 a month. Teachers and schools with education networks can get free $3-a-month accounts. On average, users pay close to $25 a month.

Ning also allows its customers to sell advertising on their own sites or to become Groupon affiliates and make money on daily deals, for no extra cost. Ning also will soon give customers the ability to charge for premium content, although they'll have to share revenue with Ning.

Rosenthal said the company is focusing on making features like this and improving its mobile offerings--things that are tailored to paying customers. When Ning's sites were mostly free, the company spent a lot of resources policing sites to make sure they weren't sharing illicit material, like child pornography, he said.

Ning also is hiring again--for sales and customer-service positions and other jobs geared toward its new model. The company slashed its work force by more than 40%--from 167 to 98--as part of the transition. But it now has more than 100 employees and 20 open positions, he said.

Rosenthal said Ning's revenue for the year will be up about 400% and that the company will be sustainably profitable by the end of this year. (It was profitable at one point in the fall but has since increased spending, he explained.)

Ning now has more than 90,000 paid sites--more than 50,000 that shifted, about 15,000 that were always paid, plus new customers it has gotten in the past year.

The company has raised at least $119 million from investors including Lightspeed Venture Partners, VentureWire records show.

Sugar Even Sweeter With $15M From IVP, Sequoia

Sassy women-focused content site Sugar Inc. has raised another $15 million in late-stage venture funding from new investor Institutional Venture Partners, as well as its original one, Sequoia Capital.

The San Francisco-based site, which has now raised a total of $46 million, said it would use the funds for brand extensions, acquisitions and international growth. Sugar, which runs the flagship PopSugar.com site, is in a media space that is both competitive and fast-growing.

Several bigger sites, such as Yahoo Inc., have been interested in acquiring it, but its husband-and-wife co-founders Brian and Lisa Sugar have wanted to remain independent. In 2009, the company broke off ties with NBC Universal by buying back its shares and got a Series C funding of $16 million from Sequoia.

Sequoia was an earlier venture investor, having put $5 million into the start-up in late 2006. NBC invested $10 million in 2007. The media giant had been selling online advertising for the site, an arrangement that had previously ended. -Kara Swisher

With the new dosh, Pop Sugar should definitely look into new ways to manage their social marketing efforts. I follow some of the Sugar categories on Facebook (they have many Sugar sites) and I know they could use Roost to cross market their pages. Roost's Circles feature is perfect for sites like Sugar who have multiple Pages that play off of each other.

I really am digging Brian and Lisa for wanting to remain independent. I have read interviews with them and they love what they do. As early adapters, Girls In Tech was first to join Facebook anduse social media in a real way to grow their network and online presence. Facebook has made some changes (and continues to make changes) and it is important to fall in line with where Facebook and social media is taking us. Groups will still be a place to connect and is a wonderful arena to have private interaction with your members, however as Facebook focuses on building out Pages, it is essential to understand the importance of have a robust Facebook Page.

In reading Mashable’s article how Social is Turning Search on its Head, I realized that although many of us are on Facebook, we may still need to understand how powerful of a tool it can be. And, with all of the changes Facebook makes, it can be hard to keep up.

Reasons why to have a Facebook Page:

Facebook Pages are indexed by Google (among other engines)
Pages are Public, anyone can “like” your Page and follow you without adding as a friend
It is easier to get someone to “like” a Page than to “join” a Group (joining sounds much more like a commitment)
You don’t have to accept a friendship to have fans or followers, they can feel connected to you through Pages
Pages are crawled as a stand alone website, sites with engagement receives a higher value and will rise to the top of Search Engines over static sites
Everyone should have a Page, there are people who are looking for jobs and are using Pages as a way to showcase themselves, independent contractors, social media consultants, as well as restaurants, boutiques, nail salons, bars, etc. Companies are using Pages for brand and image (ex. pictures of non profit work, creating an identity through personal interaction, etc.)
Savvy social marketers understand that followers do not want to be “broadcast at” but are engaged in a dialogue with people
Facebook is building out it’s analytics for Pages, including Insights and Feedback
Pages are cross marketing with each other and growing their reach
Facebook is investing heavily to make Pages the best business presence on the web

To all Girls In Tech Groups, it is worth your while to start focusing efforts to Pages. “It was her own fault” Don’t be THAT girl!

When you think of online dating, you think of love… or two people meeting at a café for the first time with big smiles. eharmony and Match.com commercials portray success stories and those who you chat with will love to tell their success stories. Until the craigslist Killer, most online dating hopefuls who have had bad experiences are too embarrassed to openly talk about them. Who wants to be the one that got duped by a married man… or worse? Just like rape, these are topics that no one talks about… especially the victim. Clearly being online is now considered “normal”. No one would bat an eye if you said you met your guy online. With Facebook broadcasting your identity, who you know, what music you like, and where you went to highschool… we kind of forget the need to maintain our online privacy.

Be sure to read your site’s safety tips. Things like telling a friend where you’ll be, not leaving your purse when you use the restroom, never logging into a public computer or even just staying sober are all things we may be lax about, especially when you’re over excited to be meeting someone for the first time! Unfortunately there are many hidden dangers of sharing too much of yourself online.

Some ways to be smarter than the average girl:

· Don’t use free sites: the craigslist Killer was able to have a blank trail. It took a team of engineers to track down a phone number only after the victim was assaulted. Paid sites capture credit card information along with the members’ name and address. Plus, don’t you want a man to fork over some dough to meet someone as valuable and special as you? Don’t skimp here!

· Always meet in a public place: This one may seem obvious, but follow the tracks of a normal date… he picks you up (instantly he knows where you live and now you are alone in his car) or he’s cooking you dinner at his house (again, you are alone and anything can happen). You may be excited but also be cautious and don’t be casual or cavalier about the way you date.

· Read through some scary stories online: You may have a trusting nature or are simply naïve (I know I am! I grew up leaving my keys in my car in our driveway!) but, reading through some real life stories will not only get you some street smarts but help you see some red flags that may pop up.

· Know what you’re risking: Aside from theft or identity theft, assault or even rape, there is another thing that can get damaged… your heart. Online dating is the EASIEST place for spouses who cheat. The ease of creating fake identities, secret email addresses, a second cell phone, po box, etc. makes online dating the go-to spot for cheaters. Aside from the obvious betrayal and infidelity, you have become emotionally vested and will inevitably be crushed by the lies and the truth. Not only would your heart be broken… your car windows may be too when his wife finds out!

Understand sharing your identity online has its dangers, watch for the red flags and be smart. You are ultimately responsible for the outcome.

And for those of you who have kids or little sisters, please, online dating is NOT recommended for teenagers and kids. Let’s be clear, sites like MyLOL (which is totally free, no parental consent needed) is a pedophile’s dream. The homepage even states there have been incidents already and the owner of the site, Anthony Limpari, simply and shamefully says “"We state pretty clearly in the terms of service, specifically not to give out any personal information at all," Mr.Liparis said. "It's up to them if they want to be open."

Whether it's for your business or personal, the rules, the privacy, and the way we share is changing every day. I really think the next wave of Roost users will be churches and synagogues... and why not? The most obvious affect the web has had on the dating scene is the ability to search online for a soulmate, a date, even just a hook-up. But which dating sites are successful? Fun? Dangerous? We’ve looked at some of the top sites for meeting people so you can decide which one is right for you.

IF YOU’RE AFTER A SERIOUS RELATIONSHIP/MAYBE MARRIAGE:

The forerunners are eHarmony, Match.com and Chemistry.com. If you’re ready to tie the knot, eHarmony sends you through a myriad of questions for their algorithm of match-making. Chemistry.com is Match.com’s more serious site, working similarly to eHarmony to find a match. Match.com offers you more control in seeking a mate. If you’re really in the husband market and looking for someone with a similar background, more specialized sites like Jdate and Christian Singles are worth looking into.

Ok Cupid and Plenty of Fish are free websites that make their money from advertisements and/or premium accounts. The reviews are mixed. Let’s just say I wasn’t shocked when a friend of mine complained that her date was very cheap about dinner…if he won’t pay for a site to meet you, then what makes you think he will pay for dinner?

IF YOU’RE AFTER SOMETHING LESS SERIOUS:

If you’re looking to broaden your connections or simply hook up, then sites like Tagged,Speeddate or Zoosk may be right for you. Speeddate is a Facebook application that allows singles in your area to ping you when you’re logged in. Speeddate was created when the founder was frustrated with traditional dating sites—he would spend a lot of time online with one person, but when he would meet them in real life, there was no spark. He wished there was a way to go through a number of people and quickly decide if it’s a match or not, online.

SITES TO STAY AWAY FROM: You probably already know this, but there are some sites where you should never use to meet a man. Craigslist, for example, makes absolutely no promises to hold any responsibility as an organization. It is simply a bulletin board, they do not fact check, and there is no form of screening or filter. As publicized on Lifetime’s The Craigslist Killer, the consequences can be serious.

Personally, I think the paid sites are safest since there is a record of their name, address and credit card.

When it comes to the single gal, the most obvious affect the web has had on the dating scene is the ability to search online for a partner or a date or even just a hook up. Or is it simply by pictures and virtual winks? We’ve looked at some of the top sites for meeting people and put them into two buckets.

The first bucket is for those who are really looking to date someone, perhaps even looking to get married one day. It’s not necessarily the main goal, but ultimately to find someone worth getting to know. These sites run the gambit, the forerunners are eHarmony, Match.com, and Chemistry.com. eHarmony is still the most popular site for marriages. If you are ready to tie the knot, eHarmony sends you through a myriad of questions for their algorithm of match making. Chemistry.com is Match.com’s more serious site, again working similarly to eHarmony to find a match. Match.com offers you more control in seeking a mate and in your intention with being on the site. Some members will be more serious about it than others, however it works on the same idea of having a more robust profile so others can know what you’re all about. If you’re really in the husband market, more specialized sites like Jdate and Christian Singles are worth looking into.

Ok Cupid and Plenty of Fish are sites that are growing in popularity. Free websites make their money from advertisements and/or premium accounts. The reviews are mixed. Let’s just say I wasn’t shocked when a friend of mine complained that he wanted to split the tab at dinner… if he won’t pay for a site to meet you, then what makes you think he will pay for dinner?

The second bucket is filled with sites and Facebook apps that allow people to get together very easily. Most of these sites are based on pictures and flirting. Relating it to real life, if this second bucket is intended for men or women to meet as many people as they can and base their findings off of looks and flirts then these sites offer quantity not quality. If you’re looking to broaden your connections or simply hook up, then sites like Tagged, Speeddate or Zoosk may be right for you. Speeddate is a Facebook application that allows singles in your area to ping you when you’re logged in. The founder was frustrated with traditional dating sites as he would spend a lot of time online with one person and when he would meet them in real life, there was no spark. He wished there was a way to speed date, go through a number of people and quickly decide if it’s a match or not, online. Websites are not in the game to fool you, their intentions are made clear, if it’s to hook up or to find the love of your life, you will know. Don’t be disappointed if you can’t find a solid man on Ashley Madison!

Last note: there are some sites to caution. Craigslist for example makes absolutely no promises to hold any responsibility as an organization. It is simply a bulletin board, they do not fact check and there is no form of screening or filter. As seen on Lifetime’s The Craigslist Killer, the consequences are all on you as to what happens. A good rule of thumb is, if there is a paid component to it, then you have a record of their name, address, and credit card. This alone makes the paid sites much more safe.

Stella & Dot - the new Tupperware Party?

Have any of you been to a Stella Dot party? I've been invited to several, but I must say I haven't yet attended one. Something about that "no obligation to buy" Tupperware or Mary Kay parties don't really interest me, or at least don't ring authentic. Of course they want you to buy! Do you really think they want you to come over, drink their wine, eat their food, and take off? Well, when I see Sequoia throwing some dosh at the Avon calling type business it makes me wonder what Stella Dot has done that the others aren't? [2/7/11Sequoia Capital has disclosed its investment in boutique jewelry and accessories company Stella & Dot.]

Aside from her claim that Stella Dot is "an an entirely new concept- an opportunity that combined the best of direct sales with the ease of e-commerce and social networking to create an oh so doable business more flexible and lucrative, fun and stylish, than ever before." Jessica Herrin, CEO and Founder of Stella Dot thinks she has the answer. Well, founding the Wedding Channel at 24 and appearing on Oprah for her success, Herrin may know a thing or two about women focused start ups. All Things Digital said Sequoia invested $37 million in return for a 10% share of the business, valuing the San Francisco-based company at $370 million. The shares were acquired from existing shareholders.

What makes Stella Dot different? Well, the classic Tupperware business has missed one key component, online social networking. Stella Dot does pull technology into the business plan, but it is still, nonetheless, a Tupperware business. Herrin calls on ladies to host house parties, office parties, and "style makes you happy hour" to sell her line of jewelry. The jewelry line is amazing, full of super trendy, quality pieces, and all priced within reach. But, nothing really unique or innovative to push the needle for funds.

Ah, but something definitely noteworthy is the fact that the site sells all their merchandise online. Doesn't this undermine the women they are supposedly supporting? For example, if I wanted some Mary Kay cosmetics, I would have to know a rep in order to buy it. The person who first introduced me to the line, would forever get my business. I'm not sure how Stella Dot justifies making it easy for their rep's customers to buy online... but hey, they are "sociably responsible".

Sequoia's website categorizes the six-year-old company as growth-stage and lists Alfred Lin and David Spector as the investment professionals responsible for the deal.

By helping other people look happy, Facebook is making us sad.

There are countless ways to make yourself feel lousy. Here's one more, according to research out of Stanford: Assume you're alone in your unhappiness.
"Misery Has More Company Than People Think," a paper in the January issue of Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, draws on a series of studies examining how college students evaluate moods, both their own and those of their peers. Led by Alex Jordan, who at the time was a Ph.D. student in Stanford's psychology department, the researchers found that their subjects consistently underestimated how dejected others were–and likely wound up feeling more dejected as a result. Jordan got the idea for the inquiry after observing his friends' reactions to Facebook: He noticed that they seemed to feel particularly crummy about themselves after logging onto the site and scrolling through others' attractive photos, accomplished bios, and chipper status updates. "They were convinced that everyone else was leading a perfect life," he told me.
The human habit of overestimating other people's happiness is nothing new, of course. Jordan points to a quote by Montesquieu: "If we only wanted to be happy it would be easy; but we want to be happier than other people, which is almost always difficult, since we think them happier than they are." But social networking may be making this tendency worse. Jordan's research doesn't look at Facebook explicitly, but if his conclusions are correct, it follows that the site would have a special power to make us sadder and lonelier. By showcasing the most witty, joyful, bullet-pointed versions of people's lives, and inviting constant comparisons in which we tend to see ourselves as the losers, Facebook appears to exploit an Achilles' heel of human nature. And women—an especially unhappy bunch of late—may be especially vulnerable to keeping up with what they imagine is the happiness of the Joneses.
In one of the Stanford studies, Jordan and his fellow researchers asked 80 freshmen to report whether they or their peers had recently experienced various negative and positive emotional events. Time and again, the subjects underestimated how many negative experiences ("had a distressing fight," "felt sad because they missed people") their peers were having. They also overestimated how much fun ("going out with friends," "attending parties") these same peers were having. In another study, the researchers found a sample of 140 Stanford students unable to accurately gauge others' happiness even when they were evaluating the moods of people they were close to—friends, roommates and people they were dating. And in a third study, the researchers found that the more students underestimated others' negative emotions, the more they tended to report feeling lonely and brooding over their own miseries. This is correlation, not causation, mind you; it could be that those subjects who started out feeling worse imagined that everyone else was getting along just fine, not the other way around. But the notion that feeling alone in your day-to-day suffering might increase that suffering certainly makes intuitive sense.
As does the idea that Facebook might aggravate this tendency. Facebook is, after all, characterized by the very public curation of one's assets in the form of friends, photos, biographical data, accomplishments, pithy observations, even the books we say we like. Look, we have baked beautiful cookies. We are playing with a new puppy. We are smiling in pictures (or, if we are moody, we are artfully moody.) Blandness will not do, and with some exceptions, sad stuff doesn't make the cut, either. The site's very design—the presence of a "Like" button, without a corresponding "Hate" button—reinforces a kind of upbeat spin doctoring. (No one will "Like" your update that the new puppy died, but they may "Like" your report that the little guy was brave up until the end.)
Any parent who has posted photos and videos of her child on Facebook is keenly aware of the resulting disconnect from reality, the way chronicling parenthood this way creates a story line of delightfully misspoken words, adorably worn hats, dancing, blown kisses. Tearful falls and tantrums are rarely recorded, nor are the stretches of pure, mind-blowing tedium. We protect ourselves, and our kids, this way; happiness is impersonal in a way that pain is not. But in the process, we wind up contributing to the illusion that kids are all joy, no effort.
Facebook is "like being in a play. You make a character," one teenager tells MIT professor Sherry Turkle in her new book on technology, Alone Together. Turkle writes about the exhaustion felt by teenagers as they constantly tweak their Facebook profiles for maximum cool. She calls this "presentation anxiety," and suggests that the site's element of constant performance makes people feel alienated from themselves. (The book's broader theory is that technology, despite its promises of social connectivity, actually makes us lonelier by preventing true intimacy.)
Facebook oneupsmanship may have particular implications for women. As Meghan O'Rourke has noted here in Slate, women's happiness has been at an all-time low in recent years. O'Rourke and two University of Pennsylvania economists who have studied the male-female happiness gap argue that women's collective discontent may be due to too much choice and second-guessing–unforeseen fallout, they speculate, of the way our roles have evolved over the last half-century. As the economists put it, "The increased opportunity to succeed in many dimensions may have led to an increased likelihood in believing that one's life is not measuring up."
If you're already inclined to compare your own decisions to those of other women and to find yours wanting, believing that others are happier with their choices than they actually are is likely to increase your own sense of inadequacy. And women may be particularly susceptible to the Facebook illusion. For one thing, the site is inhabited by more women than men, and women users tend to be more active on the site, as Forbes has reported. According to a recent study out of the University of Texas at Austin, while men are more likely to use the site to share items related to the news or current events, women tend to use it to engage in personal communication (posting photos, sharing content "related to friends and family"). This may make it especially hard for women to avoid comparisons that make them miserable. (Last fall, for example, the Washington Post ran a piece about the difficulties of infertile women in shielding themselves from the Facebook crowings of pregnant friends.)
Jordan, who is now a postdoctoral fellow studying social psychology at Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business, suggests we might do well to consider Facebook profiles as something akin to the airbrushed photos on the covers of women's magazine. No, you will never have those thighs, because nobody has those thighs. You will never be as consistently happy as your Facebook friends, because nobody is that happy. So remember Montesquieu, and, if you're feeling particularly down, use Facebook for its most exalted purpose: finding fat exes.

You would think that start ups in this space would reevaluate which direction they're going to go with the big name competitors charging forward, but it seems there is still confidence that online bargain hunters welcome the variety. Plum District just raised $8.5M in series A funding by good 'ol KP. The site focuses on Mommies, families, and women. Plum District's mission is to "make savvy moms’ lives easier and more enjoyable by bringing daily deals to her local district, as well as by providing entrepreneurial opportunities that fit her lifestyle." KPCB Partner Aileen Lee will join the Plum District board. Three cheers to Aileen, one of the few female VCs! I love getting updates on who's funding who. The beginning of 2011 has started off on an active foot. The Groupon - Google fall out was especially exciting, but what's more exciting is the fearless progression of Groupon-like sites. Google has announced that it is launching its own coupon/group buying feature called Google Offers. Mashable was the first to showcase just how directly Google is going to compete with Groupon. [click here] The Washington Post reported that "Google Offers subscribers will receive a daily e-mail offer for a buy-in discount. According to its sources, businesses will get 80 percent of revenue derived from the coupon three days after a deal runs. Google will send the rest in 60 days, after processing any returns."

As I have mentioned in my previous posts, I loved watching Groupon thumb their noses to Google's $6Million offer and love the drama that Silicon Valley brings to business. Google is a giant and it's interesting to see the beginning of an anti-google sentiment. Just like Firefox users in opposition of Internet Explorer or those who go out of their way to not use Microsoft... we begrudgingly need google. Girls in Tech is an avid group of supporters and as entrepreneurs, we love to support start ups especially in the face of fierce competition. It is targeted to us (women!) and with a female VC on the board, it is almost necessary to check the site out!

A couple of weeks ago Alameda based start up, Vook recieved $5.25M in funding. First, it's always nice to see the millions being circulated in Silicon Valley... but the exciting part is for who? Vook.vom is a site that sells experiential books and videos... sort of a twist to Kindle but even for Kindle, or your Tablet, or your iPad... VentureWire describes it as beyond buying the Sherlock Holmes book, you buy a digital "Vook" (get it?) and you get the Sherlock Homes experience. "ts Sherlock Holmes vook, for instance, features two classic stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - "The Man with the Twisted Lip" and "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" - and enhances them with videos that delve into the history and legend surrounding the character of Holmes." It's a combination of a digital book, text, video, photos, and social sharing. Vook founder and Chief Executive Brad Inman said he believes he has found the future of publishing. Just when you thought nothing can replace the last classic art form of solitary entertainment... think again. Even the nighttime novel you snuggle with in bed is going social, mobile, and interactive. Your vook (which ranges from about $7 to $16) will have about 10-20 chapters that include up to 20 short-form videos relevant to the text and are available on your iPad, iPhone, Android, and web.

Although I am a lover of technology, it seems I am still stuck in the generation that is not excited about telling everyone in the world where I am eating or getting my nails done via FourSquare or making everything I do including cooking chicken panang curry for the first time an online social event with pictures, comments and tips... it seems that the rest of the world is. When I think about reading the biography of JFK (JFK: 50 days a best-selling vook for the iPad that features content created in partnership with Perseus Books and NBC Universal), or old Jane Austin novels... I agree that I would love to discover more about the topic. I watched Becoming Jane because she is a favorite author and I thought about how interesting vook could make my annual Pride and Prejudice read.

Vook is setting out to not only entertain us with topical entertaining add ons, but further the depth in which we know, learn, understand what we are reading. Vook has released about 150 titles last year and is set to publish over 1,000 this year. They have also launched their own digital e-book imprint which will offer over 500 "how to" and educational titles to the 2011 market. Check them out and tell us what you think. Facebook and Dating: The Rules stirred so many discussions that we just had to have a part two. Dating life, married life and Facebook life is a tricky mix. But this next rule is about you and the happiness you feel in your everyday life.

RULE #4: Facebook is a glimpse of what others have carefully curated, things that people want you to see. Facebook is not real life. As humans, we have the tendency to measure ourselves up against others. Whether we’re comparing money, jobs, marriages, boyfriends, clothes…. Some studies show that many of us cannot decipher happiness without measuring it against what others have.

I learned this rule myself when I was poking through my girlfriend’s Facebook albums. There she was rocking her bikini in Bangkok, smiling on an elephant in Egypt, skiing in Aspen, holding a chocolate croissant in Paris. I adore travel, but I haven’t been out of the country in a while, so I was completely jealous…so much so that I even posted about it: “I’m so jealous of your life! Fit me in your suitcase next time, okay?!”

I soon received a charming and honest email from her: “LOL, Terra, you don’t need to be jealous—these pics are from a collection of trips over the last 10 years! I have been working like crazy and haven’t had a real vacation in over two years. Do you think I’m going to post pictures of me working till 2 a.m. and getting yelled at by my boss? Haha!” Hmm, so what my friend had posted on Facebook wasn’t entirely true?

Yes, instead of posting real pictures or sad status updates, my friend was sending a skewed likeness to her social network; an unreal image that in turn set off negative feelings of self-worth when I saw it. Yep, just as touched-up photos, digitally altered celebrity photos create unrealistic beauty expectations, Facebook and its unrealistic views of what others are up to has a negative effect on our happiness.

So, the next time you log on after a horrible day and feel even worse when you see a friend’s “OMG! Can’t wait for Costa Rica” status, remember that Facebook is usually thebest of the best picture of someone’s life. Maybe that pal is psyched to go to Costa Rica because her coworker drives her crazy, she fights with her boyfriend all the time….

Bottom line: Little to nothing on Facebook is as it seems, so take it for what it is: facevalue.

3 Tips from Chris Robin

Chris Robins, CEO of Body Media was in San Francisco for a conference and took time to have coffee and talk with Girls in Tech Associate Editor, Terra Khachooni. We sat down and dove right into her career path with the question “How were you recruited to lead Body Media as their CEO?” She talked about three things: leading from the middle, raising your hand, and taking risks. I thought it was an interesting three things… not the typical, work hard, set yourself apart, be amazing, type of advice. But each of her choices in her professional life can point to these three things.

Leading from the Middle – Leading from the middle is what Chris calls her leadership style. She describes a delicate balance between being very collaborative, but also being able to say, “This is it. This is where we are going” and make a final decision. She created a reputation of being truly accessible and having a connection with people. “I had no problem having lunch with the factory workers, I want to know enough about their jobs to care about them and understand what they did,” says Chris. We have to have that unique ability to maintain our leadership role and be sure we are taken seriously, but incorporate a humble and approachable demeanor. Chris cared more about being the best teammate and working together as a unified entity than she did about being on the top. “I was never concerned about title, I was always concerned about what can I learn… what experiences can I have.” Her key technique in leadership involves empowering others and appreciating them all the while having a clear direction and making sure all efforts are pointing in the same direction.

Raising Your Hand - Chris talked a lot about knowing what you don’t know. Her number one passion is learning to always have a deeper understanding and never be afraid to ask questions. She seemed proud to talk about how she was always the first to raise her hand and ask questions. Not only did it showcase her interest and desire to learn but through asking questions, she would become more knowledgeable and start to think about things in new ways. In every role she played, with new products, new teams, she said she “could be the dumb kid on the block ask all the newbie questions, just soak it up.” Backing it up with deep expertise in finance and marketing, asking clarifying questions has enabled Chris to analyze the strategic direction of a project which has resulted in a new course of action.

Chris had never done anything as technical as Body Media. She worked with SC Johnson and rolled out products like Aveeno and Raid Insect Spray, but never something online or mobile. Her ability to admit and blankly say, “Hey guys, I’m your non technical consumer, I need to know how to sign up” turned out to be exactly what the company needed. As a lover of innovation, Chris is able to take something completely new, ask questions, and then take it to the world with her understanding. So far, success has followed.

Taking Risks – Taking risks can mean different things for different people. Doing something new like mobile technology, marketing to a specific segment, and learning about blue tooth enabled applications was something Chris had never done before. But taking a risk meant believing in yourself and knowing there will always be a first for everything. Being a woman actually helped her; she was able to blend her professional experience with being the target consumer. Body Media looked at Chris’s background, her ability to understand a market place, market to it, and be innovative while leading a team of people.

Today Chris resides in Pittsburgh with her husband and two beautiful children and is taking Body Media to new heights.

Google CFO Says Social Web Is Not Zero Sum Game

Google Inc. Chief Financial Officer Patrick Pichette on Thursday downplayed the competitive threat from social-networking giant Facebook Inc., arguing that the digital economy will create a "ton of winners."
"Everybody will benefit if the Web is more social," he said. "It's not a zero sum game."
Pichette made his comments during an appearance at a Barclays Capital global technology conference that was webcast.
He added that the social Web was "one chapter" of the Internet book that is providing the company with "tremendous opportunities" in which the Google will continue to invest.
"You are either there to catch it," he said, "or you watch it go by."
Pichette recalled how the Mountain View, Calif.-based Internet giant's leadership team last year came to the conclusion that despite difficulties in the "real economy," the parallel digital economy would continue to "go gangbusters" as more people spent an increasing amount of their time on the Internet.
He noted that Google's engineers tend to see the world as a "broken place" that they can improve with new technology and services. He said the company's key "bottleneck" is the challenge in finding "fantastic engineers" who will help drive the company's growth.
Google in October surprised investors by providing evidence that several key emerging businesses, including mobile and display advertising, have grown faster than Wall Street expected. The details helped quell concerns about the company's aggressive investments.
Pichette highlighted Google's "incredibly successful" Android mobile operating system, which another executive earlier Thursday said is now being activated at a rate of 300,000 units a day. The company had said in August that the activation rate had passed 200,000 a day.

I was really shaken by the economy and found myself "loosing my mojo". I was attempting a complete industry and career at the worst time. I knew what I didn't know and began learning. I was humble and grateful for the opportunities that came my way. But after a couple years of working, I was ready to launch.

My work experience was absolutely relevant and I found I was incredibly more valuable to start ups because of it. Having multidimensional work experience made me understand and look at things from a completely different perspective. Times have certainly changed, it used to be you were going to be successful by simple going to college... now it's what college and why don't you have a Master's degree? The competition can be daunting, especially when Stanford Business School graduates are applying for Office Manager positions! One day a colleague of mine from my old industry asked to join a client of mine attend called Future CEO's of 2011, an event hosted by Cassidy Turley. It was a panel discussion about the economy, the speakers were incredibly successful and very smart. The discussion was part depressing and full of truth, but also discussed where the light at the end of the tunnel may come from. I felt partly encouraged when seeing the California unemployment rate and stories about how "I'm not the only one", but another part of me felt sorry for myself. I thought about friends who were landing jobs and about all the money being funded left and right to new start ups. Why wasn't it happening for me?

Afterward, we had a cocktail reception. I looked around the room, I was really the only woman. I was getting a glass of wine when a gentleman approached me. "Remember me?" he said. "Yes! Hello!" This was a colleague of mine who sat right next to me at my old Brokerage Firm. I introduced him to my friend and when my friend inquired about how we knew each other, he said "Oh Terra? She was a pistol! She owned it! This girl is so full of charm, creativity, and tenacity!" I was taken aback. Me? You mean the one who sends resumes from home all day? Who, some days, can't even get out of her pajamas or leave her apartment? Me?

This is when I realized I needed to get my mojo back. I used to be so confident, could walk into any room, talk to anyone, landed every interview and get whatever I wanted. I loved dressing up, feeling like a professional, and feeling so motivated to success. But with the economy and the attempt of a career change in a crazy environment, I found I lost my confidence. I realized I wasn't the only one. I have seen many people around the city, at Coupa Cafe in Palo Alto, loitering around the Grove in the Marina, and spending way too much time on Facebook. They too have lost their mojo. But how do you get it back? How do you geturmojo?

Let's face it, we need a reason to wake up in the morning. It's hard to get up and at'em when there's no one waiting for you. We are all smart, motivated, and valuable people but time can take a toll on your positive outlook. We meet in the mornings at different coffee shops around San Francisco (Silicon Valley Mojo starting soon!) with free wifi. It gives you a reason to wake up, put your clothes on, and get out of the house!

Google Inc.'s multibillion-dollar bid to acquire local deals site Groupon Inc. ended Friday as the two sides broke off talks, according to a person familiar with the matter, thus halting what would have been the biggest M&A deal involving a venture-backed company since the height of the dot-com boom.

Negotiations between the two companies heated up over the past week but Groupon's board, many of whom are investors, was divided on whether to accept Google's offer.

The company continued to consider remaining independent and pursuing an IPO in the future, people familiar with the matter have said.

ChicagoBreakingBusiness.com reported earlier that the deal was off.

A Groupon spokeswoman didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. A Google spokesman declined to comment.

AllThingsD previously reported that Google offered $5.3 billion for Groupon, with a further $700 million to be based on Groupon's ability to hit certain performance milestones.

The deal would have gone down as one of the most spectacular venture investments since Google.

Groupon first raised venture capital less than three years ago. New Enterprise Associates provided Groupon with $4.8 million in a first round in January 2008, and joined in a $30 million second round in December 2009. Accel Partners led that round, and then Battery Ventures and Digital Sky Technologies provided $135 million this year in April. (Some of that money went to early shareholders).

The acquisition would have been the largest for a venture-backed company since 1999 and the third largest acquisition on record, according to Dow Jones VentureSource.

The only two acquisitions on record larger than $5 billion are Cisco Systems' acquisition of Cerent, a developer of communications products, for $6.9 billion in 1999, and US West Media's acquisition of Continental Cablevision, a provider of cable television and Internet services, for $11.8 billion in 1996.

As for Web acquisitions, Google would have owned two of the three largest acquisitions of venture-backed Internet companies had the deal been completed. The Groupon purchase would have moved eBay's $2.5 billion acquisition of Skype in 2005 into the number two spot. Google's $1.65 billion purchase of YouTube in 2006 would have become the third-largest.

Groupon, a closely held company based in Chicago, has grown rapidly by getting local businesses to spend money online to attract consumers, a market Google has sought to crack.

The online market for local business advertising is expected to grow rapidly and is coveted by other large Web companies including Facebook Inc. and Yahoo Inc.

Yahoo also pursued an acquisition of Groupon, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Though both Google and Groupon run online businesses, they had significant differences. Google's army of thousands of highly educated engineers, sales and marketing executives, developed advanced software and sophisticated algorithms for its search engine and advertising initiatives.

Groupon, led by its quirky co-founder Andrew Mason, hit upon a new business model by mobilizing a force of more than 1,500 sales and customer service employees to call and deal with restaurants, tanning salons and helicopter tour guides.

Groupon, whose name is a combination of group and coupon, inspired numerous clones of its business model selling discounted products and services from local merchants.

The model has caught on because it improved on the idea of local online advertising, where a business pays money up front for exposure that will hopefully translate into sales. With Groupon, merchants don't pay for marketing until they get a customer in the door.

A potential Google-Groupon deal was controversial among Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and executives, with some feeling that the Groupon model could be copied successfully by others and that the two companies' cultures might not mesh, among other things.

Some financial analysts favored the deal, even at $6 billion, because it would allow Google to get a slice of a fast-growing market, and that Google could market the coupon product to its more than one million advertisers.

Google, whose largest purchase to date was $3.1 billion for online ad provider DoubleClick, appeared willing to pay a lot more than that to gain a beachhead in the local business space. Such businesses currently spend about $20 billion annually online--including for ads on Google's search engine--but are expected to shell out more than $35 billion by 2014, according to BIA/Kelsey, a local-media advisory firm.

Other Web companies including Yelp.com have made forays into the market, attracting suitors such as Google. Last year Google was in talks to buy Yelp, which has become the first stop for some Internet users in their search for local businesses like restaurants, dentists, taxi cab companies, among others, people familiar with the matter have said. No deal was reached. Yelp generates revenue in part by letting those businesses advertise on the site.

Since then Google has developed its own business-review service similar to Yelp's and has increasingly directed its users to its "Place" pages that give information and reviews about local businesses rather than merely directing them to sites like Yelp or CitySearch.com.

Google, which for years has been amassing business listings, has said more than four million businesses have their own "Place" page on Google to which it directs users.

Sources said the deal for the social buying site seemed likely to be struck, even as early as tomorrow, although it certainly could fall apart right up to the end. But, if done, it will move the search giant instantly to the top spot in local commerce online and give it huge troves of data about consumer buying habits and merchant information across the globe.According to sources close to the situation, Google has offered $5.3 billion for Groupon, in what will be its largest acquisition yet if completed.

In contrast, Groupon, founded only years ago, has taken off like a Roman candle and dominated the huge market for social shopping and discounting. It is on track to bring in $300 million in revenue from North America this year, and global revenue next year of more than $500 million.
The company received a $135 million investment in April from Russian investment firm Digital Sky Technologies Ltd. and Battery Ventures that valued the company at about $1.35 billion. In total, the company has raised about $175 million from investors. BoomTown first wrote about the deal discussions between Groupon and Google three weeks ago, noting the price would be well above the $2 billion to $3 billion offered by Yahoo, which was first to sniff around the fast-growing social buying site.
